# Push your first image

Use the Hostly Registry to store a container image that you built yourself. Pushing an image stores
it in your workspace; you still need to deploy it as a service afterward.

## What you need

* Docker installed and running on your computer.
* A local container image that you have already built.
* A Hostly workspace with an active plan.

The examples below use a local image named `my-app:latest`. Replace it with your own image name.

## Create a registry session

1. Open your workspace in Hostly.
2. Select **Image Registry** in the workspace navigation.
3. In the sessions section, select **New**.
4. Copy and run the displayed `docker login` command.
5. When Docker asks for a password, paste the displayed login code.

The login code is secret, can be used only once, and expires after a few minutes. The resulting
registry session remains usable until you revoke it.

## Tag the image

Docker needs a complete Hostly image reference before it can push the image. It has this format:

```text
registry.hostly.ninja/<workspace-slug>/<image-name>:<tag>
```

For example, tag `my-app:latest` as version `1.0.0` in the `acme` workspace:

```bash
docker tag my-app:latest registry.hostly.ninja/acme/my-app:1.0.0
```

Use your workspace slug in the reference. Prefer a versioned tag such as `1.0.0` so that it is clear
which image version a deployment uses.

## Push and verify the image

Push the tagged image:

```bash
docker push registry.hostly.ninja/acme/my-app:1.0.0
```

Return to **Image Registry** in Hostly. The image and its tag should now appear in the image list.

::: tip
Registry changes can take up to 10 seconds to appear in the Hostly UI because registry data is
cached. If the image or tag is not visible immediately, wait a moment and refresh the page.
:::

## Deploy the image

Continue with [Deploy your first service](./deploy-service.md). During the image step, select the
pushed image under **Hostly Images**. You do not need to add separate registry credentials.

For details about image references, tags, sessions, storage, and deletion, see
[Hostly Registry](../concepts/hostly-registry.md).
